Here’s how you can support #HomeShouldBeAHaven

There’s a brilliant new initiative by London City Voices choir that is helping to raise vital funds for survivors of domestic abuse, and we’re lending our support.

Some 276 members of the London-based non-audition community choir took part in a video recording of Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’ to launch their fundraising appeal for the vital work Women’s Aid do on a daily basis.

Savills, Barratt Developments, Arup, JLL and Multiplex are also supporting the #HomeShouldbeAHaven initiative, which, coupled with fund raising from the choir’s families and friends has raised more than £84,000 for Women’s Aid.

It’s been reported that coercive and controlling behaviour has escalated during the coronavirus outbreak, and that women and children are becoming increasingly isolated.

Over two-thirds of survivors responding to a Women’s Aid survey in April told the national charity that domestic abuse is escalating under lockdown, while 72% said that their abuser has more control over their life during this period.

Demand for the Women’s Aid live chat service has risen by 41% since lockdown began.

The online live chat service is a lifeline to expert support at a time when it can be difficult for women to securely and privately access a telephone to make a call.

The #HomeShouldBeAHaven fundraising campaign will specifically secure the future of the Women’s Aid Live Chat service into 2021.

Our CEO Peter Brooks-Johnson said: “Helping people find a happy home is at the heart of everything we strive for at Rightmove, but we know that the reality for some people is that home can be a frightening place.

“We wanted to help play a small part by supporting the vital work that Women’s Aid is doing, and we look forward to helping spread the word about the home should be a haven campaign.”
