Calan Porter is a hidden gem, set on the cliffs, overlooking an incredible bay of turquoise waters, white sands and stunning green countryside. Less than a 15 minutes' drive from the airport, it is very convenient and was one of the first tourist resorts to be established in Menorca.
The town has undergone some major improvements in recent years and is now enjoying an increasing reputation as a place for beach and nature lovers, as well as the most atmospheric dance floors in Menorca. The resort attracts couples, families and people of all ages and nationalities, particularly for self-catered holiday, although there are plenty of places to eat situated in the centre of the town. There is a clear mix of residential homes, villas and apartments, with a couple of hotels too.
Alaior town, traditionally was a village which specialised in farming and cattle-raising. Its main focus now is on the service industry. Crafts are also a great source of income in this area, specially handcrafted footwear.
Alaior still reflects its charming medieval and historic heritage, on an ancient hill dominated by its beautiful church of Santa Eulalia. It is not unusual to see a rider on horseback, winding through the streets, as horses play a huge part in the towns culture. Alaior has a picturesque rural road running from its town to Es Mercadal, called the Cami d´en kane, which was the main thoroughfare, before the main road was built.
The municipality has some stunning beaches, such as Son Bou and Calan Porter, which are both a very short drive from the town. Alaior is fantastic for wondering about early or late evening, when the heat of the sun is not around and the light brings out a more intense colour pallet. There is a market and live music every Wednesday evening during the summer season and the whole town is alive and vibrant with tourists and locals alike, enjoying tapas, cold refreshments and the warm Mediterranean air.
