Description

One of Aberlady’s finest homes set within a large plot with views over Aberlady Bay.

Description

Glebe House sits centrally within a substantial and scenic plot and dates back to 1863. An earlier manse occupied this site with the current property being built (possibly incorporating the old building) for the Reverend J H Tait. Built of stone and with accommodation over three levels, the house still retains many fine period features, including fireplaces, a beautiful staircase and the original servants’ bells, and has wonderful views across Aberlady Bay.

A driveway approaches the house from the south and sweeps round to a generous parking area to the front of the property. A large vestibule open into a bright and light filled hallway which provides access to the three main rooms on the ground floor. The kitchen is dual aspect and features an AGA and island unit with breakfast bar and there is a walk in scullery off. The room is big enough for a dining table or comfortable seating area and takes in the breathtaking views. Adjacent and also dual aspect is the drawing room which has an open fire and wonderful cornicing, also taking in views across the bay. The ground floor accommodation is completed by a south facing sitting room / study which overlooks the front garden.

The first floor is accessed by an elegant staircase. At the half landing there is a cloakroom and on the first floor there are a total of four bedrooms, (two of which are en suite) and one family shower room.

The lower ground floor has garden access and a range of flexible rooms. The current configuration includes multi-purpose rooms, one of which is set up as a games room with access to the garden, a separate cinema room and home office. There is a kitchenette, store room, wine cellar and workshop / pantry. A rear hall leads out past a shower room and has a door out to the side courtyard where there are further store rooms.

The grounds which surround Glebe House are mature and filled with a variety of colourful shrubs, trees and flowers. On the south side of the house is a generous driveway (with EV charging point) with lawns to the west. A stone wall separates the northern lawn and set within the wall is a beautiful folly / grotto, which is clad with shells and pebbles and echoes the Gosford Ice House within the nearby Gosford Estate. A large lawn runs east / west to the back of the house and along the boundary wall are a range of fruit trees. To the northwest corner is a garden store, useful for tools and garden machinery. As well as fruit cages and a vegetable garden there is a courtyard which has a range of store rooms, a bike shed and is located on the east side of the house.

Location

Glebe House is set off the High Street in the centre of the conservation village of Aberlady. The village is beautifully situated on the coast with a nature reserve and golf courses to either side.

Historically Aberlady was the designated Port of Haddington but its origins are much earlier having, had strong links with the old monasteries at Iona and Lindisfarne from the 7th century. Aberlady Parish Church which dates back to the 15th century and was re-built in 1887 is adjacent. The remains of a medieval harbour and Iron Age fort are just outside the village. Gosford House, with its magnificent walled grounds, is just to the west.

Aberlady Bay was the first local nature reserve in Britain. East Lothian Council provides Reserve Wardens and the village has the headquarters of the Scottish Ornithologists Club. The Bay also holds the wrecks of eight 19th or early 20th century fishing vessels, which have been designated as maritime scheduled ancient monuments, and two wrecks of XT-craft submarines.

Aberlady is in the heart of East Lothian’s ‘Golf Coast’ with several fine links golf courses flanking the village to the east and west. Kilspindie is the local course with Craigielaw adjoining and the village looks across the bay to the Luffness and Gullane golf courses. Muirfield, which is an Open Champioship course, is on the far side of Gullane.
The village has a primary school, Margiotta grocery store, the Grace of India restaurant, The Old Aberlady Inn and the newly opened Leddie boutique hotel, bar and restaurant. Haddington provides a wider range of shops. The property benefits from excellent travel links to Edinburgh via the A1 or by train from Longniddry.

Aberlady is in the catchment area for North Berwick High School while private schooling is available at Loretto in Musselburgh, the Compass School in Haddington and Belhaven in Dunbar.
