Description

With a muscular profile of CorTen steel and brick, this three-bedroom mews-style house is discreetly tucked away in the heart of Camden. Its plan has been formulated around a rear courtyard and comprises three smart storeys. Transport links are excellent, with Camden Road and Camden Town stations minutes away on foot; the Regent's Canal, with its delightful footpath walk, is also nearby.

The Tour

The mews house is one of two houses designed and built by European Urban Developments Limited. A ribbon of wonderfully weathered CorTen steel and glass run vertically down the length of the building, flanked by neat brickwork on either side. Underfloor heating runs throughout. Careful consideration has been given to the house's thermal properties and there are solar panels placed above a living green roof.

The house is entered from street level, via a dramatic oversized pivot steel door. The door opens to reveal a voluminous hallway clad in honey-hued Douglas fir; steel and glass balustrades offer a material counterpoint. Recessed handrails enhance smooth lines and create interesting shadow gaps on the central staircase, which is lit by a vertical pane of glass.

The open-plan living and kitchen area is on the middle floor. There are windows at either end, and a Juliet balcony opens from the U-shaped kitchen at the front of the plan. Here, cheery colour is incorporated by way of cherry red mosaic tiles above neat white cabinetry. Integrated appliances include a fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher and two Bosch ovens. A picture window over the staircase highlights its beautiful wood grain.

There is space for dining next to the kitchen, with built-in display shelves and low-level storage cupboards that continue into the living room. The windows here overlook the vertically extended walls of the courtyard garden, where a trellis of climbing hydrangea provides year-round greenery. A riven slate floor underfoot unites the space. From the hallway is a cloakroom with a WC.

All three bedrooms are carpeted and have smart en suite bathrooms. One bedroom spans the full length of the upper floor and has a cork-lined wall that lends a rich tactility. Windows bookend the room, inviting light to dance across the space. Built-in wardrobes and display shelves lend plenty of storage.

There are two further bedrooms on the lower floor, both with en suite bathrooms and recessed built-in wardrobes. In the principal bedroom, a small set of wooden steps opens out to the courtyard garden via a glass door. The third bedroom is currently arranged as a study.

Outside Space

A tranquil space, the courtyard garden is paved in Riven natural slate with climbing hydragea climbing the full height of the wall tiles. It has space for a table and chairs as well as pots for growing plants and herbs for year round visual interest.

The Area

Prowse Place is a tranquil, little known cobbled street in the Jeffrey's Street Conservation Area, in the heart of Camden - a neighbourhood reputed for its world-famous market and wealth of independent restaurants, cafés and live entertainment venues. Local favourites include an outpost of plant-based restaurant Mildreds, Koko, The Jazz Café and The Roundhouse.

As far as greenery is concerned, the wonderfully expansive Regent’s Park is less than a 15-minute stroll from the house. Originally designed by John Nash and James and Decimus Burton, the park has an ornamental lakes and various ornamental structures plus newer additions like The Hub, a venue to support sporting activities and an outdoor theatre.

Prowse Place is close to a number of schools, including the renowned state-run Camden School for Girls which also accepts boys at sixth form. Local private options include North Bridge House and the Collège Français Bilingue de Londres, which teaches the French curriculum.

The house is a brief two-minute walk from Camden Road (Mildmay line) and six-minutes from Camden Town (Northern line) The area is also exceptionally well-served by bus connections.
