The search for Lithium deposits is currently a global search and as you’re maybe aware various mining companies have secured massive investment and funding into searching and now mining Cornwall concentrating on the former Tin mines ,where various studies also highlighted this mine area as a potential hotspot for lithium. Please refer to photo mapping sale area.
The Mine was the former Wheal Ellen Tin mine.

Wheal Ellen Mine, located near Porthtowan in Cornwall, England, was a significant 19th-century copper mine known for its substantial production of copper -ore. Operated primarily between 1826 and 1867, with a brief attempt to reopen in 1907, the mine yielded over 24,000 tons of copper ore during its peak years.

Minerals Extracted:

Copper: The primary mineral extracted, with 24,153 tons of copper ore raised between 1826 and 1862.

Lead and Zinc: Smaller quantities of lead and zinc were also produced.

Mining Operations:

Labour Force: In the mid-19th century, the mine employed around 220 people during the 1836-37 period.

The engine house of Wheal Ellen was built to house a pump engine to pump water from the mine, the mine went into liquidation and the engine was never installed, so the majority of the ore and minerals were never reached.
Reworking Attempts: An unsuccessful attempt to reopen the mine occurred in 1907.

Lithium Potential:

Lithium was discovered with extensive scientific studies carried out within the mines during the 17-1800’s, There was speculation about lithium's potential uses early on when discovering throughout the mines, and was written ‘if only we had a use for Lithium. but at the time, there was no major industrial application for it.

While this mine Wheal Ellen was primarily known for copper extraction, Cornwall has seen renewed interest in lithium exploration. Companies like Cornish Lithium are actively investigating the region's granite formations for lithium deposits. However, there is no specific evidence to suggest that Wheal Ellen itself has been assessed for lithium potential.

Mining :
In recent years, the UK government has shown support for mining ventures, exemplified by a £28.75 million investment in Cornish Metals to revive the South Crofty tin mine. Cornish Lithium, a mineral exploration and development company based in Cornwall, UK, has secured significant investments to advance lithium extraction projects in the region. In August 2023, the company announced a £53.6 million initial investment led by the UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB)
This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for tin and lithium, essential for renewable energy technologies.
While specific planning applications for Wheal Ellen are not documented, the region's mining heritage and ongoing exploration activities highlight Cornwall's evolving mining landscape.
