Location

Chertsey is an historic town that originally built up around the Chertsey Abbey. The area was once a marshy island nestled between the Thames and its tributaries, it was the Monks of the Abbey who banked the river that allowed Chertsey to be formed. The Abbey was finally dissolved by King Henry VII, but not before it had left its legacy on this market town.

Chertsey Bridge is a monument in itself and is mentioned by Charles Dickens in his book Oliver Twist, published 1838, where Bill Sykes takes the reluctant Oliver to break into a house in Chertsey. As they approach Chertsey bridge, Sykes pulls Oliver to one side and he fears he will be drowned in the Thames. Instead he takes him to the Black Swan pub to imbibe before going on to commit the burglary.

Chertsey today is a market town with a strong community spirit and many historic buildings including the old town hall, as well as more recent developments, parks, rural and common land. These reasons, together with its access to the road network and train station makes Chertsey a really attractive place to set up home.

Whether you want the opportunity to hire a super car; take advantage of wild-water swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking or other river activities; enjoy the thrills of Thorpe Park; take the family to the miniature steam railway or Chertsey Museum, there is an abundance of things to do in and around Chertsey. In addition, there are plenty of local sports clubs including: gyms; cricket; martial arts; Chertsey Town football club and much more.

Chertsey has a variety of schools catering for primary school children through to 6th Form with excellent and good Ofsted ratings in both public and private sectors.

Chertsey offers restaurants, bars and cafés and is near to beautiful walks, historic houses, local art galleries and museums. It also offers events throughout the year including its annual Black Cherry Fair that has been running since 1440, the Chertsey Agricultural Show and the Chertsey Ploughing Match.

Chertsey is 1.5 miles from Junction 11 M25 and is on the Chertsey train line, from Reading to Weybridge and the Woking line. Both Weybridge and Woking have fast lines into London Waterloo.
