Description
FAMILY TIES
It was 37 years ago now that the couple fell in love with the detached house which sits comfortably within its one-third of an acre plot. “We loved it as soon as we saw it and knew it could be a perfect place for us to live,” he remembers. “Even when we spent time abroad, we kept the house on so we would all have somewhere to return to whenever we came back and forth. It remained our family home throughout all that time.” One of just seven individual houses built on a private road, the property, thought to have been completed about 60 years ago, was originally a three-bedroom cottage. “My wife was once walking in the woods nearby and by amazing coincidence met the man who had actually built it!” he recalls.
EASY LIVING
Since then, the current owners have enhanced and improved the house to make it their own. They extended it by adding a conservatory and creating additional bedroom and bathroom space; they also refurbished and redecorated throughout about five years ago. “We still stayed here a lot during our time in Dubai but when we came back permanently decided to completely redo everything,” he explains. Today the house is light and comfortable throughout and there is an easy flow between rooms, as well as between the house and garden. “We enjoy nothing more than sitting quietly in the conservatory and looking out over the garden,” he observes.
A WARM WELCOME
The ground floor encompasses the fabulous kitchen, dining room, sitting room and study. “We have bi-folding doors between the sitting room and dining room, which has worked very well for us. There is a lovely, double-sided wood burner that we can light in the winter to enjoy from the kitchen, as well as the dining room and sitting room areas.” The study, which has doubled as an additional bedroom in the past, is a great space for anyone seeking to work from home. “There is plenty of room for everyone here, even when our grown-up children and our grandchildren come,” he says. “In fact, when they stay they still like to use the same rooms they had when they were children!”
COUNTRY LIFE
Upstairs there are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The bedrooms are all double in size, with two benefitting from en suite bathrooms. The family bathroom is very large, featuring both a shower and a bath. “The bedrooms all have views out over the countryside – the guest bedroom is especially nice because of its wonderful outlook. Friends love coming to stay because it is so beautiful and peaceful. Guests have often said they have had the best night’s sleep ever in there!”
HAPPY DAYS
Over the decades, the house and garden have been the backdrop to many happy occasions. The children and grandchildren have enjoyed barbecues and family games together and there have been hog roasts and weekend gatherings for the employees of the owner’s former business. “There have been so many Christmases and big birthdays here and on two occasions we have even had a marquee out in the garden.” The couple have also enjoyed spending their free time growing home produce in their raised vegetable beds, following local footpaths and meeting friends in the vibrant village pub. There is also a 12th-century church in Worminghall and a lively village hall where many clubs and activities are held. “We are very sad to be leaving – we are only moving for family reasons,” he admits. “This has been such a lovely, happy place to be. It is the perfect family home.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The property sits in a plot of one-third of an acre, with off-road parking. The garden in particular has brought the owners great joy over the decades. There is ample space for outside dining and entertaining as well as for children to play. There is also a kitchen garden area.
