Description
The owner says Semington has numerous listed buildings dating from the sixteenth century onwards. There is a primary school, a football club, tennis court and playground. There is an active Women’s Institute and a local joint Methodist and Anglican Church. There is an annual garden fete and for special celebrations, such as the Queen’s Jubilee, the village will get together for a street party and various competitions.”
The classic Georgian façade, which dates back from 1790’s, immediately attracted the current owner. With four storeys, five bedrooms and a nursery there was plenty of room for family and guests to stay, and it was clear that this would be a wonderful house for entertaining.
“Since I moved here both the electrics and plumbing throughout the house have been updated. I’d say that it’s now a beautiful Georgian home that’s been brought right up to modern standards, but in a very sympathetic way, so it retains all its wonderful period charm.”
“The whole house is beautiful, but my favourite room is probably the drawing room. It’s very large and leads straight into the dining room, so it’s a great space to entertain in, and with the open fire it also has a very cosy atmosphere. The family room off the kitchen has a wood burner and is warm and cosy in the winter. The cellar has been converted into a lovely study, but in my mind it would also make a great playroom, den or even a home cinema.”
“The previous owner had both the front and back gardens professionally designed and they are absolutely gorgeous, and perfect for the house. To the front we have some elegant parterre box hedging, and to the back we have lawns and a very large York stone patio terrace, part of which is covered by a glass roof, so it’s a great place for entertaining, even when the weather is unreliable. To the side of the house we also have a ‘secret garden’, which is a lovely area to sit and enjoy our morning coffee. Screened from view at the back is a large parking area which is very useful. All in all, the garden is an attractive and peaceful space.”
“There are many supermarkets in nearby towns, including Waitrose in Melksham, which is only 3 miles away. There are also very good prep and public schools not far away. There is a train service to Paddington from Chippenham that takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. I’d say the combination of traditional village life, beautiful countryside and convenience make the location so special.”
