The history behind the Gala Coffe Bar.

In 1963 The Gala Coffe Bar was opened and named after the nearby underground attraction, Galaland which eventually closed in 1966 after 90 years of providing amusement and entertainment. Starting in 1877 as "The Aquarium Atrraction", it was renamed in 1925 and housed manyvaried attractions during its 90 year span including a swimming pool, theatre, skating rink, a zoo with lions, old style amusements, side shows, a resident female orchestra and even a mini big dipper called the scenic ride.

In 1992, the Gala Coffee Bar set the trend for continental pavement cafes in Scarborough being the first to be granted an outside licence by the Borough Council.
