Description

Very discreetly tucked away at the end of a sweeping drive, lined in laurels, off the first small cul-de-sac of the upper section of Thorn Road is this unique 4-bedroom Detached House.

Built originally in the early part of the 20th century, and named then Shortlands Cottage, it was an associated lodge (probably a coach house) to the neighbouring villa, Shortlands, at No.21 (now two conversions).

The original cottage has been extended over the decades, we assume at least twice, the last being by the current owner about 20 to 25 years ago.

The result is a rather spacious property of some 2077 sq ft (193 sq m) with four double bedrooms, two to three public rooms, conservatory, two shower rooms, bathroom, WC, utility room, and a large dining kitchen with handmade oak kitchen units by the no longer trading, Crannog Kitchens.

Windows and all external doors, bar the front door, are double glazed and in white framed uPVC. There is a gas central heating system with a modern Worcester Greenstar 30Ri Compact condensing boiler. The house is alarmed. White Lodge’s garden lies essentially to the north side of the house and is extremely private, enclosed by fencing along with tall beech hedging, and by natural screening (trees, planting). It has a terrace immediately to the house, with a stone-built barbecue pit with chunky side shelf, with steps leading down to a lovely lawn with a large, sunny corner, sheltered patio beside which is a good sized garden shed with power and light installed and an external water tap (there is another water tap at the house).

Ground Floor

Entrance hall; WC; living room with windows to front (W) & side (S) and a central set of French doors to the front courtyard drive; ”music room” open-plan to the living room; conservatory; sitting room (set as a home office) but which could be a formal dining room if needed, with fireplace; the large dining kitchen which has north facing windows including a wide bay, with French door, at the dining area. The Crannog units stand the test of time and include a craftsman-quality server cabinet with curved oak top. Elsewhere, work tops are in Corian. Appliances include - gas hob, double oven, cooker hood, dishwasher, freestanding American fridge-freezer. Housing for a microwave; utility room with back door (washing machine and tumble dryer included); bedroom 4 (handily a ground floor bedroom with an ensuite); the ensuite shower room - with a quality Hermitage suite and an oversized shower enclosure with a thermostatic shower. Fitted bathroom furniture. This shower room is “Jack and Jill” to the sitting room.

First Floor

A wide staircase, from the reception hall, ascends to an upper hallway with two windows to the north and a wide linen cupboard. Bedroom 1 has a bay window to the south side of the building and a suite of fitted bedroom furniture and ensuite “wet room” with wc, whb, and an open shower area with resin floor and floor drain. Thermostatic shower with both deluge and hand shower heads. Walls all tiled; bedroom 2 and 3 are both doubles, both with fitted modern wardrobes; bathroom with Edwardian styled reproduction suite.

Situation

White Lodge is in the prime Thorn district of Bearsden just to the west of Bearsden Cross and nearby the courts of Thorn Tennis Club. At the end of Thorn Road is Bearsden golf course and Thorn Park. The Cross has an excellent selection of quality independent retailers as well as a Marks and Spencers food hall. Just south of The Cross is Bearsden railway station with its regular services to the West End and City Centre including a service to Edinburgh Waverley. School catchment is for Bearsden Primary and the high-performing Bearsden Academy. Also in Bearsden is St Nicholas’ primary school and the private High School of Glasgow Junior School.
