Description

The original house, built in the 17th century, was owned by Missenden Abbey before Dissolution when it was granted to the prosperous wool-merchant Dormer family and it was replaced by the present Georgian era house in about 1830. Today it is a magnificent 4-5 bedroom home in an idyllic setting.
The property exudes a sense of luxury; immediately apparent as one enters the reception hall which is double-height and features magnificent mouldings, pillars, arches and oak flooring. The vast 25 ft x 19 ft drawing room opens off the reception hall with herringbone parquet flooring, a fireplace, cornicing, an attractive ceiling rose and window seats within the large bay window, complemented by sash windows. To the other side of the reception hall, the less formal sitting room (framed by a pair of stone pillars) again features a large bay window and a fireplace with an alcove above. The kitchen and dining area/breakfast room are located towards the rear of the house with French doors opening to the westerly-facing garden. Clearly the domain of the serious cook, there is a double Wolf oven and a central island. The feature fireplace is set within white tile-work which contrasts beautifully. The utility room and cloakroom complete the ground floor accommodation and a spacious cellar serves as a plant room and provides ample storage space.
Rising to the first floor, five bedrooms (one of which is currently use as a study) open off the galleried landing. The main bedroom has a feature fireplace with marble surround and a free-standing Italian bath tub. It is also served by an en suite shower room with a Murano glass washbasin. Another bedroom has an en suite shower room whilst the remaining bedrooms share the family bathroom.

Outside

Approached via a pair of electric gates, the shared gravel forks and leads to the house. To the front, the grounds are quite formal with mature trees (including the rare Handkerchief Tree and Indian Bean Tree), perennial plants and a large expanse of lawn. To the rear, there is a splendid arched avenue of hazel trees opening to the gardens where there are a number of fruit trees (including damson, apple and pear), vegetable beds (including asparagus), a large greenhouse and bee hives. Towards the far end, the "giant" safari tent is another great spot for entertaining; it comprises a living area, small kitchen, bedroom and shower as well as two wood-burning stoves. Externally, there is a fire-pit and pizza oven. There are fabulous views from here and horses are often seen grazing in the adjoining fields. Outbuildings include a garage by the electric gates, a sound-proof studio/garden office (formerly a garage), and a large garden shed/workshop.

Situation

Located on the edge of the village, the property adjoins woodland and offers fabulous walks in stunning scenery with the Pole Cat and The Full Moon pubs nearby. The hugely popular Peterley Manor Farm Shop & Café with a plant nursery is located just across the road. It regularly hosts seasonal events and fairs and is soon to be joined by the Ofsted-rated “Outstanding”, Shepherd’s Hut Outdoor Day Nursery which is due to open on its land. Prestwood itself (1.5 m) has a variety of shops and amenities whilst Great Missenden (2.3 m) offers more specialised shopping, restaurants and a train service to London (approx. 45 mins). Buckinghamshire is renowned for its state and private education, details of which may be obtained from the local authority.
