Description

Casa San Lorenzo is a fully and finely restored first floor apartment located in the heart of the historic centre of buzzy Isola del Liri. The apartment, which has its own independent entrance, and is not required to pay condominium fees, is also only a minute's stroll from the spectacular "Cascata Grande", the thirty metres (98ft) waterfall which forms the focal point of the old town and which is also the only waterfall in Italy to be located in a historic centre. Casa San Lorenzo is part of a elegant period building with antique charm, set in a traditional alley leading to two of the most beautiful areas of the historic centre: Piazza San Lorenzo, with its magnificent XVII century church, and the panoramic Via Cascata, with restaurants and cafés flanking the spectacular waterfall, teeming with people during aperitivo hour.

Past the original XVIII century wooden gates, a stone walled gallery, with original exposed wooden beams on the top, leads to the courtyard, where a communal garden is located. To the right, original stone stairs leads to the first floor of the building, where the front door of the apartment opens from a triangular terrace overlooking the garden.

Completely renovated, with cotto and parquet flooring and high quality finishes throughout, the apartment consists of a living/dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, study/3rd bedroom, two bathrooms and storeroom. One of the rooms has a private balcony overlooking the courtyard and a quiet residential area of the historic city centre of Isola del Liri.

The apartment in its entirety is furnished and desinged preserving the original charm of its antique beauty, marrying tradition with modernity: the bright colors of the living room's walls contrasting with the beautiful original stone fireplace is a perfect exemple of how modern design can give new life to antique beauty.

ISOLA DEL LIRI AND THE CIOCIARIA

Isola del Liri, in Roman times called called "Insula Filiorum Petri", or "the island of the Lords", takes its name today from the river that runs through it. The town boasts countless beautiful and interesting features, among which are the "Museum of the development of paper and telecommunications", in which the centuries-old paper-making tradition of Isola del Liri lives again and the spectacular "Grande" waterfall which, in the very centre of the town, cascades down about 30 metres and is the only such waterfall located within an historic centre in the whole of Italy.

Isola del Liri is a very interesting medieval town built on an actual island formed by the convergence of two rivers. The high street runs down the centre of the island, connecting the two graceful bridges, one of which overlooks the spectacular waterfall. Isola del Liri hosts many concerts, processions, festivals and other musical events throughout the year; it is twinned with New Orleans; and is renowned for its very fine fireworks displays which are centred above the waterfall and reflect in the water and spray.

Isola del Liri is part of the the Ciociaria. The Ciociaria region of Italy is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although Isola del Liri itself is temperate, less than an hour's drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.

Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicized regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns. A home or second home in the Ciociaria, in the hilltop towns of Alvito, Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or in the rolling countryside that surrounds them, will afford you a setting where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle, where you can still discover the 'real' Italy and take time out from the busy crowds of the larger tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes journey from central Rome or either of Rome's two airports.
