HISTORY

Designed by Swash & Bain, architects of Newport in a classical Baroque Revival style, with red brick with stone dressings, The Gwalia Hotel officially opened in 1900. The hotel became a fashionable destination, with visitors including the future Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, who stayed there in 1903, 1904 and again in 1905, as well as the composer, Sir Edward Elgar, who stayed at the hotel in 1909. During the second World War, the building was requisitioned for military use and following a general loss of interest in health spas, never re-opened after the war. Radnorshire County Council acquired the property at auction in September 1948, and in 1950 moved into the former hotel.

Local government reorganisation in 1974 meant the building became the HQ for Radnorshire District Council, and, following the introduction of unitary authorities in 1996, it became a customer service point for Powys County Council. The local library, which had been based Beaufort Road, relocated into the building to collocate with the customer service point in 2014.

NB: This is a rare and exciting opportunity to purchase a fine building, steeped in history and offers scope for many different uses, subject to the necessary planning permissions.

Please note: Powys County Council may (subject to negotiation) be looking to lease back a small proportion of the building on a short-term basis, to provide an income to the next custodians of the architectural masterpiece. Call us today for more information.

Telephone & Broadband: Telephone- subject to BT transfer regulations. According to comparethemarket.com the property has a broadband speed of: 34.00 Mbps (average speed of Mbps).

Please note you should always confirm this by speaking to the specific provider you would like to use. This is for guidance only.

The property is located just off the centre of the popular Llandrindod Wells, which is the county town of the largest county in Wales, Powys. Offering an extensive range of retail, recreational and educational facilities the Spa Town is a popular destination for visitors due to the picturesque surrounding countryside and mixture of beautiful Victorian and Edwardian town houses. Llandrindod is easily accessible by both rail and road with several local bus services in and around the area, neighbouring towns and villages.
