The municipality of Montijo, in the district of Setúbal, is located in the Greater Lisbon Region (NUT II) and the Setúbal Peninsula (NUT III). It has an area of 340.6 km2 and covers eight parishes: Canha, Montijo, Santo Isidro de Pegões, Sarilhos Grandes, Alto-Estanqueiro-Jardia, Pegões, Atalaia and Afonsoeiro.
In 2005, the municipality had a total of 40,199 inhabitants.
Anyone born or living in Montijo is called a Montijense.
Interestingly, the municipality is “divided” into two non-contiguous geographical units: one, smaller, which includes the seat of the municipality, is located between Alcochete and Moita; the other, larger, is located to the northeast of the municipality of Palmela.
It has a Mediterranean climate, with a dry period of 80 to 100 days during the summer, where the average temperature is around 29 ºC. In winter, temperatures are moderate.
Its water resources are the River Tagus and the Tagus estuary.
Its morphology is fairly gentle, with only Senhora da Atalaia standing out at an altitude of 67m.
