Buckley is an interesting place. On normal visits I always think of it as being just a normal little town, providing all you need without any real fuss but scenic? It never crosses my mind, but then it springs a surprise like this. Stepping into the garden of this home and seeing the breadth and scale of the views down across the valley brought a whole new dimension to my opinion of the place and it was overwhelmingly positive. It was all the more surprising to find this at the end of a suburban road, surrounded by what appeared to be 'normal' suburban housing but it only goes to show, you should never prejudge.
Off the Mold road and on the edge of becoming Mynnyd Isa, surrounded by ostensibly similar properties this home is something a bit special. On a corner plot at the end of what is, in effect a cul-de-sac where passing traffic becomes a thing of the past and you can relax in peace, we find number 9. Sitting in the corner has the effect of shrinking the frontage slightly, reducing your expectations and making what you find inside all the more impressive. The front of the home has been laid to crushed slate beside the short driveway to the attached garage and which is both attractive and practical, providing additional parking on the occasions it is needed.
A wide canopy style porch offers protection to both the front door and any passing carol singers come Christmas, while keeping you dry as you unload the car after the weekly supermarket visit. Stepping through the semi composite front door and into the inner hall, the staircase rises in front of us while to our right is the door into the lounge. And what a lounge it is, being a big room in itself but made to feel even bigger by the open plan way it incorporates the dining room towards the rear which in turn becomes the way into the stunning kitchen. Confusing? It sounds it, but in the flesh it all makes perfect sense. The lounge is bright and airy, thanks to its forward facing picture window and further helped by even more light spilling through from the dining room where its patio doors overlook the garden.
The dining room itself is comfortably large; enough to accommodate the sort of table necessary to host the dinner parties that such a home will surely encourage, and eating while overlooking the far reaching view is certain to be a pleasurable experience. Unless the chef is rubbish of course.
But how could he be rubbish in a kitchen like this? With a great deal of difficulty. Walking in here you are reminded of the Masterchef kitchen; apparently minimalist but this is due to all its equipment being hidden away, ready to perform its culinary magic. There are three sets of fitted units, the one containing the sink beneath the huge window looking down over the garden while opposite here on the inner wall is a floor-to-ceiling bank of fitted cupboards which also house the eye level ovens. Finally the far wall features a long bank of fitted worktops with corresponding high level storage above. From this section of the room the back door opens onto the same area of decking accessed via the dining room's patio doors. Also from this part of the kitchen, a short corridor runs towards the front of the home, passing the ever useful downstairs cloakroom as it does. But this is no ordinary downstairs loo, for it contains not only the usual hand basin and lavatory but also a walk-in shower cubicle, handy for when sweaty children tire of galloping around the garden rolling in the dirt and are not fit to be allowed into the cleaner bits of the home. Most importantly, the whole kitchen is spacious enough for multiple people to work without falling over one another, reducing the likelihood of the sort of falling out that would ruin even the most peaceful of family dinners.
Stepping out onto the decking, the scale of the garden becomes apparent as it slopes down to the perimeter fence but from the top, it is the view that most impresses. I never thought of Buckley as particularly mountainous and was amazed at the distances I could see, right across to the distant hills, making this an enviable spot to fire up the BBQ and relax.
Moving upstairs the quality of this home continues to impress. At the top of the stairs, on our immediate right is the smallest of the bedrooms. This, like so many in modern homes is slightly compromised by the intrusion of the stairwell but should this present a problem I have seen cabin beds being built over the section of floor affected which is an idea that seems to work well.
The next room is slightly larger but, not having the compromised floor space makes it feel much bigger and could, at a pinch, accommodate a double bed although storage may be something of an issue.
The remaining two bedrooms are both well proportioned doubles, offering all the space you need for any free standing furniture you feel necessary and with the addition of that view, become very attractive indeed.
Finally we come to the bathroom, which follows the trend set by the kitchen in that it is very modern and beautifully executed. Tiled from floor to ceiling in fashionable shades of grey it features a suite of a table-top hand basin and lavatory incorporated into the same unitary item featuring additional storage cupboards and a traditional bath with a protective glass side screen preventing any splash-back from over enthusiastic use of the shower above. The shower draws its hot water directly from the combi boiler, meaning it will never unexpectedly run cold on you, however determined you are to stay long enough to resemble a prune...

All in all this is a home full of surprises, from the unexpected size of the accommodation to the standard and quality of its fitments and did I mention the views? To find all this in somewhere as unassuming as suburban Buckley came almost as a shock, but a nice one none the less. For anyone with children the garden is a positive boon, as is the size of the lounge and the number of bedrooms; and the accessibility of some excellent local schools answers some questions you may not have even asked yet. Is it perfect? Possibly not but it comes close.
