Location & Lifestyle
Sarteano is an interesting medieval town in the south of the province of Siena, between Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, just 7 km from the Chiusi-Chianciano exit of the Autostrada del Sole (A1). Dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, the town is divided between old and new. The old village is bounded by the ancient walls, with three arched entrances leading through narrow alleys to the imposing castle at the top of the village, while recent housing developments are part of the new village. Given the historical importance of the village, there are museums, ancient Etruscan tombs, and important events such as civitas infernalis not to be missed. Another important and famous event is the Giostra del Saracino, a competition between contrade, where five knights compete with a pole and a ring; the one who takes the most rings wins. Sarteano is also in a very strategic location from which the most famous villages of the Val d'Orcia such as Pienza, San Quirico, Montalcino, Montepulciano and the spa towns surrounding Mount Amiata, San Casciano dei Bagni, Bagni San Filippo, Bagno Vignoni, are easily accessible. Rome, Florence and their respective airports can also be reached within an hour and a half.
