Description

Glen Lui is a unique 2624 sqft residence on a 0.30-acre plot in the semi-rural village of Sharnbrook, where you’ll find a quiet life among countryside, yet within an easy commute of the capital.

Believed to be the first property on Lodge Road, Glen Lui was originally a single storey dwelling, built by a local landowner for his daughter. It was home to an English cricketer early on, and has had only a handful of owners over the decades. The current owners moved here in 2012, refurbishing straight away to better suit 21st-century life. In a real labour of love, they undertook roof works, rewiring, replastering and reconfiguration, and installed new heating, plumbing and windows, all while retaining character.

What drew them to this property was their need for enough space for their family of seven. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms was a big box ticked, and there are also varied, versatile living areas, with many bright from dual aspects. The lounge is a good size but still cosy and comfortable, and the dining room is fantastic for more formal occasions. Mrs was keen to have a room that felt Scottish, so they could celebrate Burns Night in style, and the room has a festive vibe, with bold walls and a tartan carpet. There’s ample space for guests, none of whom leave sober… They also added a conservatory at the back in 2015, which soon became their favourite spot to read and relax, with strictly no TV. The glazed roof and surrounding windows afford lots of natural light, the French doors give access onto the garden for summer, and there’s underfloor heating for warmth in winter.

The kitchen at the front of the house is contemporary, fitted with gloss cabinetry and granite-effect surfaces, Karndean flooring, mosaic tiled splashbacks, and with integrated appliances such as a gas hob and extractor, dual ovens and a dishwasher. There’s an alcove for a fridge/freezer, and the utility room at the end of the hall has gaps for a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

The hallway is the central vein of the home, with Karndean flooring the full length. There are the living areas one end, a shower room and the kitchen in the centre, and the utility, cloakroom and three double bedrooms the other end. The primary bedroom in the corner has a luxe feel, with gold carpets and textured baroque wallpaper, and benefits from a modern en suite shower room. With so much on one level, the layout works well for single-storey living if needed.

The storage on offer is crucial for a family, including deep cupboards in the hall and primary bedroom, built-in furniture to two of the upstairs bedrooms, and an attic space off another that makes for a huge walk-in wardrobe. The boarded loft provides plenty of storage, running around the house and with some areas you’re able to stand up in. Mr has loved having a workshop to store his things, and this has power for machinery, and lighting for tinkering away late into the night. The double garage also allows for substantial storage if not needed for parking.

Parking is no issue here, with a gravelled carriage driveway, a car port, and a secondary driveway to the side. The southwest-facing front garden is gated to both sides, private behind mature hedging and screened by sycamores. The large lawn has been used as a badminton court, and there’s a bench and a swing chair the owners will sit on for morning coffee, among the beautiful planting.

To the rear garden, there are multiple spots to sit, such as a raised deck for al fresco dining, a barked area for sun loungers, and a secluded deck in the corner ideal for a hot tub. The lawn is edged by planted borders and established hedging, and there are tall trees for screening, shelter and shade. The owners, who regularly host garden parties, have added a bar and barbeque area, and they contemplated creating an even bigger bar in the garage, or taking the garage down entirely (stp) to grant them more outdoor space.

Glen Lui is set back along Lodge Road, within swift walking distance of schools and amenities, and only a 15-minute drive to Bedford centre and station, where there are direct rail services in London in as little as 40 minutes. Sharnbrook is off the A6, so there’s convenient access locally and continuing nationally, and bus routes connect the village to Bedford town.

There’s something for everyone in Sharnbrook, and this was a big part of the appeal for the owners. There’s a nursery, a primary school and Sharnbrook Academy, and Bedford’s Harpur Trust is just a short drive away. For after school and at the weekends, there’s a theatre, a village hall, allotments, a board game café, a golf club, a sports centre, as well as various sports teams. Events are held all year round, including fairs and music festivals, and the village has all the essentials, from doctors and vets, a shop, a café, two pubs, plus a cute little florist. Sharnbrook’s best feature is its scenic location. It’s the perfect place for country walks and dog walks, and has been a special place to raise a family. With all bar one of their children having now flown the nest, the owners bring this home to market to be enjoyed by a new family, just as they have done.
