Description

Completed in 2021, this Shou-Sugi-Ban timber-clad converted barn is nestled in the rolling Somerset countryside. It has two bedrooms and a versatile, open-plan configuration set against panoramic views over the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Despite its secluded feel, the house sits four miles from Bath and is within easy reach of the M4.

The Tour

Concealed by a canopy of trees, the house sits in a quiet, rural position. Entry is via a sweeping driveway that provides parking for four cars. Finished with Shou-Sugi-Ban timber, the plan is lateral, dark and discrete, belying the bright and airy decorative scheme inside.

At the rear of the house is the open-plan living space, set beneath a tall pitched roof and white-painted trusses that emphasise its sense of volume. An apex window at the rear frames uninterrupted and breathtaking views across the valley, equally arresting come rain or shine.

The living space is arranged in front of glazed doors that extend the interior plan onto the rear terrace. At the other end of the room are the kitchen and dining areas, well-lit by windows on either side with deep sills. Graphite shaker-style kitchen cabinetry is offset by ochre-painted walls and sweet star pattern tiles. Timber countertops provide plenty of food preparation space. Opposite is the dining space, as well as a door to the terrace which runs along the side of the house.

Towards the front of the house is the larger of the two bedrooms and its neat en suite shower room. Generous and dual-aspect, it is also set beneath a vaulted ceiling. The room's versatility means that it would also make for a brilliant second reception space; double-height barn doors open to the front of the house and can be used as the primary or secondary entrance.

The second bedroom sits centrally and is finished with a cocooning dark blue wall. The bathroom is opposite, with a bathtub well-placed beneath a skylight. Metro tiles and a tidal green bath cabinet complete the contemporary finish.

Outdoor Space

A garden area and balcony wrap around the house, shaded by mature trees. A terrace is bordered by leafy flowerbeds and is easily accessible via a side door from the kitchen living area. There is a patio area with exquisite views over the valley.

To the rear of the reception area, a raised, west-facing balcony to watch the sunset over the valley.

The Area

Just minutes away from Box's wonderful community, the house is ideally located for everyday amenities. With its spectacular hills and valleys, several country strolls and cycles can begin at the doorstep. The local pub, The Quarryman's Arms, is a two-minute walk away, while The Northey Arms is 25 minutes on foot and has an excellent food and ale menu.

Bath is only four miles away, well served by outstanding retailers and restaurants, with a particular focus on independent provisors. Corkage, Landrace Bakery and the weekly farmers' market are of particular note. The Holburne Museum, The Bath Recreation Ground, the National Trust’s Skyline Walk and the Roman Baths are also nearby.

The house is within easy reach of the M4. Trains run from Chippenham to London Paddington in around an hour and 10 minutes.
