Description

Sensitively Upgraded

The current owners have improved this delightful cottage in numerous ways in the last few years. During their stay, they installed a new combi-boiler and designer radiators, replaced the kitchen, bathroom, and WCs, redid the electrics, fitted new wooden sunrise doors and venetian blinds, redecorated throughout, and landscaped the garden. The charming, traditional exterior, with its lower rendering, rustic hanging tiles, and exposed brick base, also received a new lick of paint in 2023, while the gutters were cleaned in June 2024.

You'll discover the house in a leafy area known for its semi-rural village atmosphere. Attractively planted stone walls support its raised corner plot location on the edge of a cul-de-sac, creating a lovely outlook across the pretty street. To the left, a shared driveway leads to a designated parking space and a garage, which has power and was fitted with a new door in 2022.

Let's Explore

A wrought-iron arched entrance opens from the driveway to the front garden, which leads to a new modern front door, also accessible from steps rising from Wish Hill. An exterior wall lamp with a stylish exposed bulb lights the way into a useful porch with space for coats and shoes, a practical tiled floor, white-painted brickwork and shutters to the side window.

An obscured double-glazed door on your right opens into a bright carpeted hallway with an in-built storage cupboard and a contemporary radiator. To your right, step down into a modern two-piece WC painted in fresh white tones, a sink in a vanity unit all under a charming sloped ceiling.

Opposite, an Art Deco sunrise door (featured throughout) reveals the kitchen, with its glossy duck-egg blue wrap-around cabinetry, chrome handles, and white worktops echoing the tiled floor and splashbacks. Replaced in 2020, the kitchen is fitted with a Candy electric hob, an extractor hood, a double oven, a fridge, a dishwasher, and a wine cooler.

A large, recently replaced window with Venetian blinds and a part-glazed back door draw in natural light, while a square LED ceiling light and a matt grey vertical radiator add style. Outside, you'll also find access to a separate utility room with a new door and room for several appliances.

Continue down the hall to find a sunny dining room decorated with white coved walls and a grey carpet underfoot. Chic black-and-gold horizontal pendants softly illuminate a space for a large table, while glazed double doors and windows frame the high-spec resin terrace - the perfect spot for a private evening drink.

In the adjoining sitting room, a gorgeous bow window currently being fitted with brand-new shutters for additional privacy while you're lounging by the gas coal-effect fire with a neutral tiled surround. Crisp white coved walls and a cosy carpet bring an airy, relaxed feel, and the horizontal pendant light matches the one in the dining room for a cohesive design.

Retreat Upstairs

From the hallway, the turning staircase lit by a side window meets the first floor, where the high-spec light fittings, and sunrise doors continue. The carpet underfoot flows into all three bedrooms, while to the left, there's a part-tiled WC with modern sanitaryware, bright white paintwork, and a blue-and-white striped blind to the window.

An airing cupboard with a heated towel rail sits beside the fully tiled family bathroom, which features nautical blue-and-white tiles that complement the roller blind to the window, a glass-screened rainfall walk-in shower, a large vanity basin unit, and a matt heated towel rail.

The primary bedroom faces the front garden through a broad window with new shutters being installed. Running along one wall, bespoke wardrobes with shelving and Art Deco triple doors to match the rest of the house provide plenty of storage.

Behind the master, bedroom two is a bright, good-sized double with neutral coved walls and Venetian blinds to the wide window. Meanwhile, the third bedroom benefits from full-width wardrobes that could be removed to create more space if desired. In addition, a fully boarded loft runs the length of the house.

Step Outside

Nestled at the end of a row of traditional terraced homes, the cottage's corner plot allows for a generous, fully landscaped wrapping garden. To one side, double doors in the dining room open onto a fully fenced courtyard laid with a resin patio edged by a raised woodchipped flower border, climbing plants, and yellow roses. A new awning also creates shade.

From here, a tall wooden gate invites you onto a block-paved terrace enclosed by planted borders, low stone walls and wrought-iron railings. Follow the stepping stones across a low-maintenance white-pebbled area ripe for pot plants to discover another brick patio. Beyond this, a raised lawn framed by numerous colourful flowers overlooks the beautiful stone buildings across the street.

Out & About

Willingdon is a parish in the Wealden District of East Sussex, on the outskirts of Eastbourne. On your doorstep, you'll find a Post Office with a small shop and friendly pubs and eateries, including The Wheatsheaf Inn, the Red Lion, Thai Village, and The Pantry Coffee House.

There's also a service station with an M&S convenience store up the road, a beauty salon, a lovely little church, and the Ofsted 'Outstanding' Chalk Hill Pre School. Within a few minutes' drive, you'll find Willingdon School and Ratton Secondary (both 'Good'), but Eastbourne College and Bede's and St Andrew's preparatory schools are within striking distance, too.

Conveniently, Willingdon sits on a bus route into Eastbourne. Immediately east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain and part of the larger Eastbourne Downland Estate, the town is well-known for the quaint Victorian streets of Little Chelsea, five miles of bustling seafront thronged with great restaurants, a three-tier promenade and a Victorian pier.

Other highlights include the annual pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament at Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club in June, the Airbourne four-day airshow in August, two theatres, and the Towner Art Gallery, which recently hosted the Turner Prize. The Royal Eastbourne Golf Course is also nearby, while Southern line train services from Eastbourne station will deliver you to London Bridge and London Victoria in 90 minutes.

Beyond the town, Beachy Head and the South Downs National Park are just minutes away by car. The current owners also love visiting the plethora of parks nearby, with Shinewater Country Park right at the centre of town for walking, running, fishing, cricket and bird spotting.
