SAN LAWRENZ

San Lawrenz is a charming, traditional village located on the western side of the island of Gozo, adjacent to the Ta’ Dbiegi Craft Village. The village is set on a flat surface surrounded by three hills: Ta' Ghammar, Ta' Gelmus, and Ta' Dbiegi. The latter, standing at 195 meters above sea level, is the highest point in Gozo.

The village encompasses the beautiful Dwejra Bay, renowned for its unique ecological features recognized both locally and internationally. The Dwejra nature reserve, which is part of the village's territory, prominently features Fungus Rock and, until its collapse on March 8, 2017, the iconic Azure Window.

Despite the presence of a five-star hotel, the Kempinski San Lawrenz, which offers a wide range of health and spa treatments, San Lawrenz has retained its traditional, rural lifestyle.

San Lawrenz is one of two villages in Gozo named after a saint, the other being Santa Lucija. Devotion to Saint Lawrence spread worldwide by the 4th century AD and reached Gozo's shores. By the end of the Middle Ages, there were three churches dedicated to Saint Lawrence: one inside the Citadel, one near Ta' Ghodlien, and another at Ta' Ciangura. The village took its name from the church dedicated to Saint Lawrence.

San Lawrenz was established as a parish on March 15, 1893. Before this, the area was known as Ta’ angura, with its history tracing back to before the Siege of Gozo in 1551, during which much of the population was enslaved by the Ottoman Turks.

Prior to becoming a parish, San Lawrenz was part of the neighborhood of l-G arb. However, the residents desired a separate community and their own church. The foundation stone for the new church was laid and consecrated in 1886, with a relic of Saint Lawrence placed beneath it. The villagers participated enthusiastically in the construction of the church.

The village feast of San Lawrenz is celebrated in the first week of August.
