The village of Sandrà was of some importance in Roman times, named Humerio (shoulder) because of its conformation, as evidenced by artifacts found in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It later lost its importance to the detriment of Castelnuovo. It remained important for worship, however; in fact, the parish church of Sant'Andrea (one of the oldest rural churches in Verona) arose here. From this church in fact the name of the hamlet became Sant'Andrea, shortened later to Sandrà.
