Description

Three Horseshoes Cottage enjoys a gorgeous setting alongside a little used village lane overlooking a beautiful stretch of the River Avon. It dates from the late 17th century and was originally three cottages housing the village smithy, butcher’s shop and an alehouse. It is attached and built in the locally traditional style using bands of mellow red brick and flint alongside chalky limestone (clunch) under a thatched roof of combed wheat straw. Beautifully presented, brimming with character both inside and out, it retains many original architectural fittings including light-coloured wall and ceiling timbers and lovely fireplaces including the former smithy forge in the kitchen. The ground floor comprises a 29 foot long, centrally positioned sitting room with the reception hall and ensuite guest bedroom on one side and the kitchen/breakfast room at the other. The sitting room has east and west-facing windows and is currently arranged with separate study/snug and seating areas, each with their own fireplace. The kitchen/breakfast room also has windows on two sides, a vaulted ceiling and is filled with natural light. It has a large dining area and is fitted with contemporary style units under timber work surfaces and a range of built-in electric appliances. Upstairs are three further bedrooms. One of these currently serves as the principal bedroom and overlooks the river. All the upstairs bedrooms share the family bathroom which also has a separate shower. However as one of the other bedrooms has a large storage space there is scope to convert this into a shower room.

Stable Cottage & Outside
To one side of the cottage is a gravelled courtyard with spaces for several cars backing onto a double garage. In one corner of the courtyard is the property’s self-contained guest cottage with attached store, Stable Cottage, which has recently been used very successfully for holiday accommodation. Immediately behind the main cottage is the former beer cellar, which has its own shower room, kitchenette and mezzanine sleeping floor, which could serve as a studio apartment or annexe. The garden is very private and lies entirely behind the main cottage. It incorporates a paved patio just beyond a wide gravelled strip and a further series of terraces with raised beds and areas of lawn that lead up eventually to an elevated lawn alongside several trees and a summer house with views across the garden along with a greenhouse and garden store.

The property is situated in a peaceful, west facing position overlooking the River Avon in the small, pretty village of Enford, which has a thriving community with a village-owned pub, parish church and village hall. Neighbouring Netheravon has a Morrison’s convenience store/post office and primary school. In East Chisenbury, which is a mile away, there is the well known Michelin star pub The Red Lion. Further amenities and state schooling can be found in Marlborough, Pewsey, Amesbury and Durrington. The cathedral city of Salisbury is also within easy reach, providing additional wider shopping, leisure and cultural facilities plus Bishops Wordsworth and South Wilts Grammar schools for boys and girls respectively. Private schools in the area include Marlborough, Leehurst Swan, Godolphin and Farleigh.
