History:
During the Roman era, one of the Roman roads, the Via Antoniana, passed next to the current urban nucleus. It was during this time that the Romans dedicated these lands along the Singilis River (now called Genil) to vines, olive trees, and especially cereals. In this period, numerous remnants of Roman villas can be found in the municipal area, including the remains of a bridge over the Arroyo de las Pozas, the remains of baths in the well-known Villa Del Burriana, and remnants of baths in the area called "Baños de Escobar." There are also numerous remnants of blown glass objects, bases, and column remains, plow remnants, coins, bracelets, grinding-related stones, and Roman mosaic remnants from the 3rd century, such as those found in the area called "Huertas del Marqués" and in the Cortijo del Conde area.
During the medieval period, along with Cuevas de San Marcos, the area was populated by Muslims who were conquered by the Infante de Antequera Pedro de Narváez.
