Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal with a strong connection to the sea. From Viana do Castelo you can quickly reach Porto or Spain.
From the Santa Luzia hill and the Sagrado Coração de Jesus Temple you can see the privileged geographical situation of the city, near the sea and the Lima river mouth. Walking through some of the streets of the historic centre you will reach the Praça da República, the heart of the city. This is where the fifteenth century Misericórdia building and the fountain are located, as well as the old Town Hall. Not far away is the Romanesque Sé or Mother Church.
Facing the sea that made Viana's history, a baroque church holds the image of Senhora da Agonia, a devotion of the fishermen. It comes out every year on the 20th of August to bless the sea in one of the most colourful festivals in Portugal, where it is worth mentioning the richness of the typical costumes that parade in the festivities exhibiting the beauty of the filigree in gold.
On the outskirts of the town you can go for a ride along the coastal or river bicycle path or along one of the many marked trails, as well as surf, windsurf or kitesurf and bodyboard on beaches of fine, golden sand. You can also go jet-skiing, sailing, rowing or canoeing on the Lima river.
