Description

A picturesque and historic cottage set in a glorious rural location.

Description

The property is situated amidst wonderful rolling countryside. Indeed there are stunning views across the valley and the atmosphere is certainly one of peace and tranquillity.

The house is Grade II listed and possesses all the charm and character that one would expect of a property that dates back to the 14th century. The earliest part of the building is a single hall, with part of its cruck roof construction still in place.

The comfortable accommodation is of flexible layout and includes a main reception room with a wood burning stove, a studio room which opens into the courtyard, dining room with an Aga and a bespoke kitchen which includes oak units with granite worktops and Miele appliances. Also on the ground floor is the third bedroom and a shower room. From the dining room a spiral staircase leads up to a charming sitting room with a wood burning stove. The room could also be used as an additional bedroom. Adjacent is the principal bedroom with fitted wardrobes and an en-suite bathroom. From the studio room a staircase rises to the second bedroom with vaulted ceiling.

The grounds extend to about a third of an acre and totally complement the style of the cottage. Wisteria, jasmine and pears dress the front facade which overlooks a lawned area from which there are enticing views across the valley to Miserden. To the side of the house is the former garage which is used as a utility/boot room. To the rear of the house, there is a most attractive courtyard and a little further away a Cotswold stone workshop. The lawns are interspersed with fruit trees and sweep down to a wooded area. The property is enclosed by dry Cotswold stone walling. There are specific sitting out areas with the sights and sounds making for a truly relaxing home.

Location

Chantry Cottage is situated in an idyllic position close to Syde, a small Cotswold village between Cirencester and Cheltenham. The village is one of the smallest parishes in Gloucestershire and lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, high up in the Cotswolds and above the source of the River Frome. The surrounding countryside offers a wonderful choice of walks along a network of footpaths, bridleways and byways. There is a good community spirit in the village and a classical musical festival is normally hosted annually at Syde Manor.

The A419/417 is less than a mile away and provides dual access to junction 16 of the M4 (about 27 miles). In the opposite direction is junction 11A of the M5 which connects to the south west and the Midlands. The Fosseway gives excellent north/south access and intercity trains to London Paddington run from Swindon or Kemble, taking from 55 and 75 minutes respectively. Everyday facilities can be found in the historic market town of Cirencester which is about nine miles away. Apart from a very good range of shops and services, the town provides a leisure centre, a hospital and a wide range of clubs and societies. The splendid Regency town of Cheltenham is also about nine miles away and is made up of elegant garden squares with the promenade being at its heart.

There is a wide range of sporting and leisure facilities found locally. These include golf at Cirencester and Cheltenham, polo at Cirencester Park and Longdole, racing at Cheltenham, sailing and other water sports at the Cotswold Water Park, shooting and fishing with local syndicates, gliding at Aston Down and rugby at Cirencester Rugby Club. There are theatres in Cheltenham which is also well known for its exceptional shopping and the large number of festivals that take place there throughout the year, including the Cheltenham Literary Festival.

History: Chantry Cottage is an historic home with a fascinating history which dates back over six centuries. The property is mentioned in Pevsner and is understood to have been built as a chapel in 1343. The benefactors were the estate of the late Thomas Berkeley and the building of the chapel meant that a priest could say mass, thereby ensuring that Thomas’ soul would rest in peace. The chapel was probably converted into a house after the Reformation in the mid-sixteenth century.
