Loughton has been settled since 500 BC however the first modern references are from 1062 when the Lukintune wasfirst mentioned.
The area didnt expand until the 17th century when the high extended north through the forest.
The road quickly became the main route from London to Cambridge and Loughton grew into an important stop.
Popular with the rich and wealthy and home to Mary Tudor before she became Queen Mary of England in 1553.
