Description

Casa Greco: A very appealing, recently renovated apartment in an exclusive and ancient location in Arpino. This historic property is located in the very heart of the historic centre of Arpino, in the Arco district, an area perched above the central Piazza Municipio. The entire building is divided into only two apartments.

The location is particularly enviable, sheltered yet open to the sun, with a panoramic view of both the enchanting town and the stunning surrounding Italian countryside. The houses here date back to very ancient times, the site recognised through the ages as an excellent place in which to locate a home. The beguiling character of the place adds immensely to the historical charm of the house itself. It is an area full of alleys of medieval origin, beautiful stairways, steps, arches, doorways and carved stone lintels where time stops to give flavour to the pure history of the town.

The entrance, with access from Via Greca, opens onto a common staircase that leads up to the second and uppermost floor of the building where the apartment is located. The external walls are traditional, typical of the medieval old town, externally plastered and painted. The roofing is in ancient tiles.

A large entrance hall leads to the generously proportioned open plan living / dining / kitchen area of about 35 m² has an enchanting view of the old tiled rooftops of Arpino, the Piazza Municipio and, in the distance, the rolling hills beyond. The master bedroom, which has windows looking two ways, is very spacious. Next door to it is the main bathroom (there is a connecting doorway between the two which has currently been closed, but which could be reopened). There are two further guest bedrooms, which share a jack-and-jill bathroom.

There is a small terrace area overlooking the old town. The building is divided into two apartments, and currently both apartments have the right to use this terrace (which can be accessed from the corridor outside the apartment's front door). However the other apartment also has a private terrace, so it is possible the owner would agree to sell his right the shared terrace, should you want to reopen the access directly from your apartment, and have the terrace for your sole use.

On the ground floor there is a cellar room of 20 m². This has a beautiful and very ancient stone fireplace on the wall. The space would lend itself excellently to use as a lovely little tavernetta room for wine tastings.

All the rooms are in good condition, with characteristic terracotta flooring, double glazing, traditional wooden 'persiane' shutters. The apartment is fitted with a radiator central heating system with a wood-gas fuelled boiler, in addition there is radiator heating with a natural gas fueled boiler. There are connections for utilities, water, electricity, gas etc.

For those who love to invest in the history of places, the apartment in Via Greca is an ideal choice. Already having had recent conservative restoration, the apartment is a residence ready for immediate hassle free occupation in a unique location steeped in history and close to the heart of a wonderful venerable old town. With a little style, flair and imagination this property will become a fabulous and enviable home.

ARPINO AND THE CIOCIARIA

Arpino is one of the major medieval hilltop towns in the area of Italy called the Ciociaria, the name given to the fertile land that lies south of Rome but north of Naples, situated inland in the hills in the heart of Italy. The Ciociaria region is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although Arpino itself is temperate, less than an hour's drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.

Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicised regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns. A home or second home in the Ciociaria, in the hilltop towns of Arpino, Veroli, Alatri or Alvito or in the rolling countryside that surrounds them, will afford you a setting where over two thousand years of history combine with an idyllic rural Italian lifestyle, where you can still discover the 'real' Italy and take time out from the busy crowds of the larger tourist cities, while being less than ninety minutes journey from central Rome or either of Rome's two airports.
