In ancient times, the Romans considered the region of Cape Tunnel - which ran from Mértola through Vila Real de Santo António to the inlet of Armação de Pêra - and the region of the Sacred Promontory - which covered the rest of the Algarve - to be in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula.
