With origins tracing back to Roman and Moorish eras, the *Old Town* exudes a timeless charm. The Moors occupied this locale in the 7th century, and remnants of their presence endure, including sections of the castle and Moorish fort walls. The name *Albufeira* is derived from the Arabic term for *west* and was originally known as *Albuhera.*

Retaining much of its historic allure, the old town's narrow, white cobblestone streets wind from the central square through lanes adorned with trendy open-air bars, street performers, vendors, and a diverse range of eateries — from local establishments serving the beloved *bifana* (a pork steak sandwich) to Michelin-starred restaurants.
