Almada is a Portuguese city in the District of Setúbal and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It is the ninth-largest town in Portugal, with around 95,000 inhabitants.

It is the municipal seat and is 70.21 sq km in area, with the municipality split into five parishes with a total of 174,030 inhabitants (2011). The municipality is bounded to the east by Seixal, to the south by Sesimbra and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. To the north and northeast, it is bounded by the Tagus Estuary opposite Lisbon and Oeiras municipalities.

The county received a charter from King Sancho I in the year 1190. Along with Lisbon, Sintra and Palmela, it is one of the oldest administrative divisions within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Almada, which was awarded city status in 1973, includes Costa da Caparica, which was made a city in 2004.

Its main points of interest include the Cristo Rei National Sanctuary, the Capuchins Convent and Gardens, Monte da Cruz, the riverside zone, parks and gardens (Chão das Artes botanical garden, the Palácio/Casa da Cerca – Contemporary Art Centre, the Almada Castle Garden, the Costa da Caparica Fossil Cliff, among others). In addition to its central location, it has shopping areas and good access to the capital via the 25 April Bridge, the Sul do Tejo metro - an environmentally-friendly electric transport system with three routes, and 19 stops with connections to other public transport services - shopping areas, the university and more densely populated areas, the Fertagus railway and the Transtejo ferries with two routes to Lisbon: Cacilhas - Cais do Sodré and Trafaria - Porto Brandão - Belém.
