Description
A unique and once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase your own piece of the United Kingdom. Hurst Spit adjoins the historic Hurst Castle, built by Henry VIII to defend the western approaches to the Solent. The land comprises approximately 9 acres at the entrance to the picturesque Keyhaven River and a further 1.5km (approx. 20 acres) strip of shingle jointly owned with HCC (indicated in red hatching on the Ordnance Survey plan). The remains of Hendy's Cottage was refused permission to build and is now classified as a ruin.
There are no services and the pieces of land comprise mostly shingle. Access to the land is either on foot via the shingle spit, by boat or by Hurst Castle ferry. There is a right of way for vehicular access via a locked gate at the end of Hurst Road.
Hurst Castle itself is maintained by English Heritage.
The land comes under the control of the New Forest National Park Authority and the Solent Maritime Special Area of Conservation, together with the Solent and Southampton Water Special Protection Area. The latter two are both International Nature Protection Designations. From our investigations, whilst there were structures in place up until the mid 1980's, it would appear that no new structures can be put on the land.
NOTE: The footings shown on the plan are of Hendy's Cottage which is also visible in the photographs. The red outline in the photographs is intended as a visual guide only. Please refer to the Land Registry map for the accurate ownership title.
