History

The Maltings was a Malting mill purpose built in the Edwardian era for the purposes of processing grain.

The Mill was accessed via the railway line that ran under the extended hoppers which you can see today which would have been used to fill rail storage bays and transported across to their end users for the purposes of food and alcohol production.

The railway lines are still evident to this day with the branch line that came off to access the building.

Originally when built it was 3 times bigger than it is today with food processing improvements and processing moving to factories the mill fell into disuse before finding a new lease of life as a timber yard in 1995

An accidental fire in 1999 caused extensive damage to the building caused by a machine during timber processing and two of the original building were lost and subsequently had to be demolished

The timber yard carried on trading until the site was bought in 2008.

The Maltings timber company as it was called based at the site relocated and was subsequently bought up by Howarth Timber who carry on trading today.
