The factors considered the most important for American youth in the 18-24 category included employment, housing availability and affordability, insurance and education costs and lifestyle factors like shopping, nightlife and leisure facilities.

North Dakota ranked top of the list, mostly because of its booming economy and low (5.3 per cent) unemployment rate, but also because of its low insurance and education costs. South Dakota ranked second because it also boasts a relatively low unemployment rate, but also because of its availability of low-cost rental accommodation.

Close in geographic proximity, Iowa landed third place because it has the lowest and most competitive insurance rates in the nation. And although North and South Dakota held their own in terms of lifestyle factors, Iowa boasts a higher than average number of fitness clubs and bars relative to the size of the population. Montana has a similar abundance of health clubs and a reputation for a thriving nightlife; it also has relatively inexpensive college tuition and affordable housing.

Nebraska came in fifth. Although it has less to offer in terms of lifestyle factors, unemployment is low and the cost of living is very manageable. Delaware ranked sixth overall because of its great tuition rates for college students but has the nation’s highest car insurance premiums, so public transport is popular. Conversely, Vermont which is next on the list has some of the highest tuition rates for students but has a very youthful population and houses more fitness clubs per capita than any other state.

Alaska, Utah and New Hampshire rounded out the top ten most desirable places for youth to live.
