“I am in the process of planning the move to Turkey that I have been dreaming of for quite some years now and am therefore an avid reader of the Turkey Buying Guide. One thing that concerns me about moving to Turkey permanently is the job market – as an expat living over there, do you think that I will be able to find paid work?”

Hello and thanks for your email! You are right to be a little concerned, working in Turkey can be a little bit of a minefield and it is important that you conduct your research to make sure that you understand the challenges that you will face and the requirements you will have to adhere to in order to not fall foul of the law.

As Turkey is not part of the EU, you will require a work permit to take up paid work in the country. If you are lucky enough to secure work over here before you come, you should ask your employer to help you to get this permit sorted.

The types of jobs that are available to you will depend entirely on where you are planning on basing yourself. If you are going to be living on the coast, the choice of jobs will be largely relating to the tourism or property markets. You should also note that a lot of the work that you will find here will be seasonal.

Wherever you are you could always try your hand at Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) – you will find work either in language schools or as a private tutor.

What job do you currently do and is there a chance to continue this remotely? Many expats over here still freelance back in the UK and when you look at it, with a laptop, skype and the internet – you can pretty much work from anywhere!
