There have been over 600 confirmed tornadoes in America since the beginning of May this year. Whilst places in the south east like Florida see the tornado season happen in early spring, further west still have it to come during the summer months. That is not to say that they can’t and don’t happen any time of the year. This is something to consider if you are planning a trip out there soon.

In a way, it might be good to go during the tornado season, especially if you are planning on moving to the US permanently, as tornadoes are something that millions of Americans have to endure every year.

What causes tornados?

Thunderstorms develop in warm, moist air ahead of cold fronts moving east. These thunderstorms then often produce strong winds, large hail stones and tornadoes. Tornadoes are also called twisters and cyclones and are a dangerous swirl of air which forms a funnel of condensation which touches the earth’s surface and stretches up to the base of the cloud.
The majority of tornadoes have wind speeds of less than 110mph and are around 250 foot tall. They are usually 80 metres wide and travel for several miles before dispersing.
