If your idyllic overseas destination includes a seafront promenade, you’re spoilt for choice in Spain. Here are of some of our favourite esplanades for balmy evening strolls

Isla Canela

Isla Canela, Costa Huelva
The ocean-facing side of Isla Canela, a golf and leisure resort on a 1,700-hectare island next to the Portuguese border, is a seven-kilometre stretch of unspoilt sandy beaches.

The eastern half of this stunning beachfront is accessed by a magnificent esplanade, which is overlooked by a string of apartment complexes, hotels and restaurants, all separated from the beach by a protected strip of vegetation.

The prom leads into the resort’s pretty marina, on a river estuary. The wilder western end is suited more to kite-surfers. Most of Isla Canela, which is connected by a bridge to the waterfront town of Ayamonte, is protected natural marshland. The resort includes a championship golf course.

Seafront apartment, Torre del Mar

Torre del Mar, Costa del Sol
The prom at Torre del Mar, the Costa del Sol’s principal resort east of Málaga, is said to be one of the longest in Europe. This is thanks largely to EU funding being used for improving the infrastructure there.

Following Torre’s uninterrupted four-kilometre-stretch of sandy beaches, fringed with restaurants, bars and apartment complexes, the esplanade reaches as far east as the pretty marina at Caleta de Vélez. Just 30 minutes from Málaga airport, typical buyers in Torre opt either for an apartment on one of the small beachfront complexes or a villa a few minutes off the seafront. The resort is geared primarily to families and retains a more Spanish feel than many of the resorts to the west of Málaga.

Sea-facing Cabo Roig apartment

Orihuela Costa, Costa Blanca
A stretch of coastline particularly popular with British expats, most of the beach resorts that make up the Orihuela Costa, just south of Torrevieja, are connected by an undulating coastal promenade.

The scenic walkway meanders between Punta Prima in the north and Dehesa de Campoamor in the south, and includes the resorts of Playa Flamenca, La Zenia and Cabo Roig, with its pretty harbour.

The path links a number of sandy beaches and coves, and includes cliff-top views of the famous La Manga strip in the distance. Front-line developments are popular there, although there is also plenty of choice for properties within a short walk from the promenade

Playa Blanca apartment

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote
The ‘Paseo Maritimo’ that tracks Playa Blanca’s seafront is a highlight of Lanzarote’s second largest resort, a former sleepy fishing village located at the southern tip of the island.

Running from one end of the resort to the other, the approximately two-mile walk takes in the pretty beachfront of in the centre of the resort, ending at the smart Rubicon marina to the east and the Pechiguera lighthouse to the west. The stroll is worth it for the stunning views across the sea to neighbouring Fuerteventura.

Pine Walk apartment in Puerto Pollensa

Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca
One of Mallorca’s most popular family resorts, Puerto Pollensa lies within a horseshoe bay with a mountainous backdrop in the north-east corner of the Balearic island, a location protected from the elements and ideal for a picturesque promenade.

Called the Pine Walk, much of the the resort’s famous esplanade that runs around the bay for two miles is lined with pine trees that lean towards the calm, sandy beach, offering much welcome shade in the hot summer months.

The bars and restaurants along the way are a popular place for an evening drink or dinner.
