New flights have made it easier for British buyers to discover the pretty beach resorts of Spain’s Costa del Azahar. We take a closer look

Resorts along the lesser known Costa del Azahar could be ideal for house-hunters searching for an alternative to Spain’s more developed Costas, now that Ryanair has successfully launched two UK routes into the region’s new airport.

It’s just a year since the first passenger flights, operated by Ryanair, took off from Castellón Airport in the heart of the Costa del Azahar, also known as the Orange Blossom Coast and located between Valencia in the south and Tortosa in the north.

The budget airline’s flights began in September 2015 and include a thrice-weekly, year-round service from Stansted and twice-weekly, seasonal service to Bristol. Since then, two other new routes have been launched, one to Bucharest and another Ryanair service to Sofia.

“Historically, the Costa del Azahar has been overshadowed by Spain’s more developed Costas, ones with better access from the UK,” said Laura Richards, Spain specialist at PropertyGuides.com. “The new flights there should change this, as the region has plenty to offer, including the beach resort of Peñiscola, with its harbour and impressive fortified old town, used for filming scenes of Game of Thrones. Then there is the lively seaside town of Vinarós with its carnival, the quaint resort of Alcossebre and lively Benicàssim, famous for its music festival, one of the largest in Europe.”

Also accessible via flights into Valencia and Tarragona-Reus, the Costa del Azahar is also famous for its vast plains of orange groves which fan inland from the coast. Other points of interest include the seafood, with Vinarós langoustines touted as the best in Spain, the picturesque Serra d’Irta Natural Park, the Aquarama water park.

A tempting buy in Peñiscola, known for its gently sloping family friendly beaches, could be this three-bedroom villa near the sea. It comes with a solarium, terraces and a garden. To find out more, click on the image.

In Alcossebre, we’ve found this furnished two-bedroom, two-bathroom front-line apartment on a gated complex with communal gardens and pool, and with direct access to the beach.
