Mallorca, the largest and most developed Balearic Island, is cementing its position as one of Spain’s hottest destinations, after recording the largest rise in tourists of all Spanish regions and enticing low-cost carrier easyJet to open a base there.

Welcoming 678,000 international tourists in March this year alone, the Balearic Islands witnessed an impressive increase of 39.3 percent when compared with 2015’s numbers, with Mallorca accounting for the lion’s share.

According to the most recent figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), 4.82 million tourists visited the country in March, with UK visitor numbers increasing by 25 percent in comparison to the same month last year. The UK remains the largest single market for international tourism in Spain, accounting for 23.1 percent of all visitors in March.

Meanwhile, in a sign of confidence about Mallorca’s importance as a tourist and second home destination, airline easyJet has announced that Palma de Mallorca will be their first ever seasonal base. From March to October 2017, there will be three aircraft based at the Spanish airport.

Recent figures from Aena show that easyJet carried double the amount of passengers through Palma airport in 2015 compared with 11 years ago and this latest investment in the island’s airport highlights the positive expectations for its future.

“It’s not surprising to see a Mallorcan resort, Santa Ponça, in Rightmove Overseas’s Top 10 Climbers list for April,” said Laura Richards, Spain Buying Guide specialist at PropertyGuides.com. “For homeowners in Mallorca, the prospect of more flights to the island will be hugely welcome. Improved access will just add to the appeal of the island, which really caters for everyone, from the international jet set, boat lovers and the Spanish royal family, to typical British families looking for a friendly beach destination.”

Elsewhere, Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey España, commented: “EasyJet’s decision emphasises Mallorca’s presence as a primary destination of choice for international tourists. As demand continues to grow, we are determined to provide an array of high quality properties in locations that reflect the best of Mallorca’s culture, culinary creations and coastline.”

Less than an hour from Palma’s international airport, and only a short distance from the local fishing port and Mallorca’s golden coastline, the new Bahia Sant Pere complex is a great example of what’s available on the island today. Each two and three-bedroom apartment, priced from just €189,000 (plus VAT), has two bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen with breakfast bar and the use of a private parking space. Each resident will have access to the development’s two swimming pools and communal gardens.

Known for its outstanding natural beauty, the village of Colonia de Sant Pere allows visitors to experience the more rustic side of Mallorca, being the perfect location to enjoy both the mountainous landscape of the Peninsula de LLevant Natural Park and the beautiful coast, with the white sandy beach of Sa Canova.
