Each year beaches and seaside resorts are graded by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). This year, Termoli, (Molise, southern Italy) has been awarded its first blue flag.

The FEE awards the prestigious Blue Flag to places based on an assessment of its beaches and marinas. The assessment looks at water quality, environmental management, and safety and services nearby. The flags are highly desired as they can increase a places popularity and number of visitors.

Over 41 countries compete for Blue Flags, with an estimated 3650 beaches and marinas going under assessment. Not only is this good to drive tourism to an area but it also provokes the local councils into taking action on keeping the beaches safe, clean and of a high quality.

The region in Italy which was awarded the most Blue Flags was Liguria which claimed 17 flags. Liguria was closely followed by Marche and Tuscany which both got 16 and Abruzzo which got 14 flags. Other popular regions were Emilia Romagna and Veneto which both showed an excellent range of services.
