Owning your own property in Italy could make sure that you get a good night's rest while on holiday there.

Travel add-ons provider Holiday Extras has published figures showing that unfamiliar surroundings lead to sleepless nights for many vacationers.

Nearly three in ten (29 per cent) of those surveyed admitted that being "between strange sheets" causes them to have problems sleeping.

Managing editor Mike Whiting suggests taking a pillow with you when you go abroad, to add a sense of familiarity to the bedroom.

"Holidays are meant to be relaxing – but sometimes there's an element of missing home and familiar things too," he says, adding that a sleepless night does not always mean that the vacation is not being enjoyed.

Previous research from the firm found that accommodation is the most common cause of complaints among holidaying Brits, which could lead some to consider buying property in Italy or other destinations for a dependable place to rest their head.
