Despite having a reputation as the wettest city in the USA, the Seattle suburb of Hunts Point has been ranked number one choice in the 2012 Bloomberg Rankings List of preferred retirement spots. According to leading economist, Stan Humphries, the biggest draw is the availability of waterfront properties.

Although only boasting a tiny population of just 400, the average retirement income for each of these households was reported to be $200,431 (approx. £127,000). Hunts Point properties average at a cost of more than $1,000,000 (approx. £632,000) and almost half enjoy at least an acre of land.

Number two on the list is the town of Golf, in Florida’s Palm Beach County. Here the mean retirement income is $158,418 (approx. £100,000) and the median home value is just shy of $1 million.

New York’s Long Island is home to three of the top ten places on the list; all are within the Town of North Hempstead which is a 30 minute train ride Manhattan. Median home prices here are in excess of $1million. Other towns in the top ten include Barton Hills, Michigan; Bannockburn, Illinois; Orchid Island, Florida; Camino Tassajara, California and Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
