Following months of dispute between budget airline Ryanair and the Catalonian government, which saw most routes from Girona stopped over the winter, agreement between the two sides has finally been reached.

Ryanair announced 19 new routes from Girona from the end of March 2012, increasing the total to 59. They promise to bring around 3 million passengers a year into the Spanish region of the Costa Brava. This will be a great relief not only to second homeowners in the region but also to the 3,000 people whose jobs depend on Girona airport, to the many small businesses in the area and also to the hotels, restaurants and bars.

Girona airport is a modern, comfortable airport, just a few miles from the city and with direct bus links to Barcelona, 90 kilometres away. It is the ideal airport for reaching the beautiful and mainly unspoilt coast of the Costa Brava, the Pyrenees for skiing or hiking and locations just over the border in France. Existing Ryanair routes include London Stansted, while new ones include Doncaster, Cork and Madrid.
