The Rome Zoo, also known as Giardibno Zoologico or the Bioparco Spa, is one of the eldest and most prominent in Italy. It has also recently become a conservation centre and has a large variety of flora and fauna. The zoo was built in 1908 and three years later opened to the public.

If you fancied taking a bit of time off whilst searching for property in Rome, it is located to the north of the Villa Borghese estate and covers around 12 hectares. The zoo has been home to many different species over the years, and whilst other zoos in the country focus of the breeding and scientific research of the animals, the Rome Zoo’s main aim is to entertain and educate people. The zoo aims to provide a break from all the Roman architecture that can often overwhelm many tourists. There are also many recreational activities for visiting children.

Over time, the zoo has been expanded several times, and the two main attractions in the current day are the Great Aviary and the Reptile House, which was first opened to the public in 1935. The zoo was made into a biopark in 1998, and had the backing of the City of Rome authorities who provided over 50% of the funding for the expansion.
