Music’s singing sensation Rihanna has been named as the new official ambassador of tourism for Barbados.

The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) named her in New York recently after she signed a three year deal with them. The singer is contracted to ‘exclusively promote’ Barbados as a tourist destination. This will be done through the use of advertising campaigns, as well as promotional appearances and the use of the social media.

Richard Sealy, the Barbadian Minister of Tourism said “In the hearts of every Barbadian, Rihanna is known as the girl down the road, but to the world she has become a musical sensation and social phenomenon”. He added “She is a great source of national pride to Barbados, and we are thrilled to enter into this formal partnership to promote Barbados as a leading tourist destination”.

It is believed that Rihanna agreed to become the official ambassador to her home country because she wants others to experience the “spirit and warmth” of her fellow Barbadians. In her statement she said “Barbados is a place like no other, and one of the reasons for this is the spirit and national pride of our people”.
