Kiwi job seekers are worried about new plans to relax the visa restrictions for the migrant workers who will be entering the country to work during the Rugby World Cup. The Immigration minister however has assured them that they will not lose out on potential job vacancies.

An exclusive report by ONE News, revealed that extended visas are being awarded to many unskilled but English – speaking workers, so that they stay in the country throughout the tournament.

This revelation has caused an uproar from the New Zealand nationals who are seeking employment, but the Immigration ministry has insisted that the visas will only be awarded to around 600 workers, and only when there are no New Zealanders to do the job. Many of the positions are within the hospitality area, which will see an increase, making lots of new jobs for the nationals.

Usually, when a migrant applies to work in New Zealand in a job with no specific end date, the visa is issued for 12 months, and 12 months only. The immigration ministry is trying to calm people down as they still need workers to come and work during the tournament however, they also don’t want to upset their own.
