The region of Provence remains popular for French property buyers, it has been noted.

A report in the Times highlighted the fact that British expatriates continue to purchase homes in the area, with many being attracted to the "more wholesome" experience offered.

The publication explained that prices have fallen by just six per cent over the last year as Brits are attracted to the densely forested region, with homes being more affordable the further inland they go.

Highlighting the benefits of Provence, editor of French Property News magazine Karen Tait pointed to the fact that more time can be spent with French people themselves than may be the case in tourist areas.

"Buyers come here for something a bit cheaper than the coast but also for that picturesque French idyll. It’s less swelteringly hot, full of beautiful buildings and the crime rate is low," she added.

Property prices in the area could be set to rise, as Marseille-Provence was recently named as one of two European Capitals of Culture for 2013.
