Brits looking for an ideal place to take a holiday this winter could head to a property in Portugal, a country long popular with holidaymakers from the UK.

Regional director of tourism for the Azores Miguel Cymbron said: "The more traditional [part of Portugal] is the Algarve; sun and sea. We offer something different, We offer nature. The contact between the land and the sea is very close so you can do whale watching, dolphin watching, diving, walking and hiking."

He also noted the popularity of the region of Funchal.

Those with a property in Portugal could be interested in heading to the country for an outdoor-based break and Mr Cymbron said that the country is ideal for nature lovers.

Nature-loving Brits could also be interested in heading to a Portuguese property on the island of Madeira, a destination also known as the flower island.

Portugal recently came eighth in a poll of the top ten destinations for 2010 carried out by travel firm Lonely Planet.
