While recent reports have shown the economic downturn is taking its toll on UK holidays abroad, Portugal property still offers the holiday maker something Britain cannot – guaranteed sunshine, admits VisitBritain.

Elliott Frisby, spokesperson at VisitBritain, commented: "More people are considering holidaying at home.

"[However], Britain can’t really compete with guaranteed hot weather in the same way that the Mediterranean can, [so] for many British people, Mediterranean and overseas will still be popular."

The comments will come as welcome news to those considering investing in Portugal property as a holiday rental investment opportunity.

Recent statistics from travelsupermarket.com showed that the tighter economic conditions have resulted in a 44 per cent increase in the number of Brits searching the website for holidays at home rather than abroad.
