'Careful planning needed' before moving to property in FranceAnyone considering purchasing a property in France – or elsewhere abroad – should make sure they do all the necessary planning before making the move.

This is according to Stefano Lucatello, senior partner at The International Law Centre, who stated that people who want to emigrate should spend at least 18 months getting ready to leave for their new home.

"Even though things may change within that [period], you have to have the ground rules set and ready," he asserted.

Mr Lucatello also advised those buying a property in France to retain their English home if possible.

He stressed that it is important to have somewhere to come back to if you are unable to settle in your new country.

Meanwhile, Stephen Jones, from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, advised anyone considering emigrating to think about what they want to do once they leave the UK.

This could include any pastimes you want to enjoy in your new country, or where you are going to work.
