– Murcia’s new airport, known officially as the Murcia Region (Región de Murcia) International Airport, but also called Corvera Airport, becomes operational on 15th January 2019, nearly 11 years after work first began on it.

As the region’s new civilian air hub, it will take over from Murcia-San Javier Airport, which will discontinue all commercial flights the day before continuing solely for military use. The broad plan is that all air traffic and ground operations, including flights, passengers and staff, will literally switch airports overnight on 14th January.

– Murcia Region International Airport is located just outside the village of Corvera. It’s midway between the cities of Murcia and Cartagena, both accessible via the A-30 motorway and less than 30 minutes away.

Villa in Camposol

The famous Mar Menor lagoon and resort of Los Alcázares are a 30-35-minute drive. The resort of Puerto de Mazarrón and the Costa Cálida is around 45-50 minutes away, and the popular community of Camposol 40-45 minutes.

It is also conveniently located within 20 minutes from a selection of golf resorts, including La Torre and Hacienda del Álamo.

The airport will also serve as a gateway to the southern part of the Costa Blanca, in particular resorts along the Orihuela Costa.

– The airport has the capacity to operate 23,000 take-offs or landings a year, serving three million passengers annually. It has a single 28,500-square-metre passenger terminal with 25 check-in desks, nine gates and four luggage reclaim belts.

– It is expected that most, if not all, airlines currently flying in and out of Murcia-San Javier will simply transfer their services to Murcia Region Airport.

To date, both easyJet and Jet2 have formally confirmed they will be using the new airport from March 2019, the former kicking off with flights there from Bristol, Gatwick and Southend, the latter offering routes from Leeds Bradford and Manchester.

Ryanair is yet to confirm its position.
